The latest issue of the ECMWF newsletter (issue 184, Summer 2025) features an article on ECMWF’s advanced initiatives to leverage underutilised visible and near-infrared radiances for numerical weather prediction. The article highlights the close collaboration between ECMWF, DWD, and HErZ who pioneered the use of visible radiances in NWP in recent years. Advanced observation operators for visible radiances developed by Leonhard Scheck and his colleagues are now distributed to the broader community through the NWP Satellite Application Facility (SAF) showcasing the leadership of DWD and HErZ and the beneficial collaboration for the international community.
