A world of extremes: How do we turn the climate crisis into our opportunity?

News from Sep 30, 2024

The yearly Wetter.Wasser.Waterkant. Education Weeks (www2024.de) offers all Hamburg schools a free program on the topics of extreme weather, climate change and sustainability. DWD Hamburg has been offering a workshop at Wetter.Wasser.Waterkant for the last five years. This year, two colleagues from HErZ joined the team: Iuliia Polkova and Marlene Klockmann (OceanWeather, Uni Hamburg), and Stefanie Bauditz (DWD Hamburg) offered two workshops on “A world of extremes: How do we turn the climate crisis into our opportunity?” The offered slots (2 hours each) were booked by two Hamburg schools with 49 participants in total. The workshop started with a short presentation on some fundamental aspects about climate change and extreme events, followed by a Q&A session. Afterwards, the students worked in breakout groups, where they proposed their own measures on climate mitigation and climate adaptation. A session on discussing the opportunities from implementing concrete measures wrapped-up the workshop. The students were extremely motivated and active, and the discussions were a real joy. The final discussion often addressed problems on the way to co-designing a climate-friendly future. The result was a very productive conversation and even clear action plans such as supporting the Hamburg initiative on implementing socially responsible climate law ("Zukunftsentscheid Hamburg"). The workshop left the students with a feeling of hope and inspiration.
