Fundamental research within the Hans-Ertel-Centre

The Hans Ertel Centre for Weather Research (HErZ) carries out fundamental research to improve weather forecasting and climate monitoring. This is prerequisite for the German Weather Service (Deutscher Wetterdienst; DWD) to be able to respond to the future challenges facing its key customers. To this aim an internationally visible competence centre has being established, creating a network between DWD and leading meteorological research institutions in Germany. This strengthens the university education in meteorology and assures personnel development for the DWD and the research institutes.

HErZ is focused on the following competence areas:

  • Data assimilation and predictability
  • Model development
  • Climate monitoring and Earth system forecasting
  • Integration of measurement data and modelling
  • Optimal use of weather and climate information

and on the following clusters:

  • Seamless Prediction
  • Novel Observations
  • Communication and Co-Design

Seven projects work in HErZ to achieve the aims mentioned above:
